The actual usable capacity of storage products such as USB drives, memory cards, hard drives, and optical discs is typically less than the nominal capacity due to differences in manufacturer and operating system calculation standards.

Additional details

Manufacturer standard: 1GB = 1,000MB; 1MB = 1,000KB; 1KB = 1,000 bytes.
Operating system standard: 1GB = 1,024MB; 1MB = 1,024KB; 1KB = 1,024 bytes.

This discrepancy is an industry-wide standard and results in normal variance between labeled and actual usable capacity.

For optical discs, typical labeled vs. actual capacities are

700MB labeled = 700MB actual
4.7GB labeled = 4.38GB actual
8.5GB labeled = 7.92GB actual
25GB labeled = 23.29GB actual
50GB labeled = 46.59GB actual

The speed indicated on the disc is the theoretical maximum recording speed (e.g., 1-16X means up to 16X speed, not a fixed speed).

Speeds such as 1-2X, 1-4X, 1-8X, and 1-52X all indicate a range of supported speeds.

Factors affecting actual recording speed include laser head aging, computer settings, compatibility between burner and disc, and burner support for high speeds.

It is recommended not to record at the highest speed to ensure better recording quality and success rate.
